RESUMO

This study utilizes ultraviolet and fluorescence spectroscopic indices of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from sediments, combined with machine learning (ML) models, to develop an optimized predictive model for estimating sediment total organic carbon (TOC) and identifying adjacent land-use types in coastal sediments from the Yellow and Bohai Seas. Our results indicate that ML models surpass traditional regression techniques in estimating TOC and classifying land-use types. Penalized Least Squares Regression (PLR) and Cubist models show exceptional TOC estimation capabilities, with PLR exhibiting the lowest training error and Cubist achieving a correlation coefficient 0.79. In land-use classification, Support Vector Machines achieved 85.6 % accuracy in training and 92.2 % in testing. Maximum fluorescence intensity and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm were crucial factors influencing TOC variations in coastal sediments. This study underscores the efficacy of ML models utilizing DOM optical indices for near real-time estimation of marine sediment TOC and land-use classification.

RESUMO

Natural purification of pollutants is highly recognized as regulating ecosystem services; however, the purification capacity of tidal flats remains largely unknown and/or unquantified. A 60-day mesocosm transplant experiment was conducted in situ to assess the purification capacity of natural tidal flats. We adopted the advanced sediment quality triad approach, monitoring 10 endpoints, including chemical reduction, toxicity changes, and community recoveries. The results indicated that contaminated sediments rapidly recovered over time, particularly > 50% within a day, then slowly recovered up to âˆ¼ 70% in a given period (60 days). A significant early reduction of parent pollutants was evidenced across all treatments, primarily due to active bacterial decomposition. Notably, the presence of benthic fauna and vegetated halophytes in the treatments significantly enhanced the purification of pollutants in both efficacy and efficiency. A forecast linear modeling further suggested additive effects of biota on the natural purification of tidal flats, reducing a full recovery time from 500 to 300 days. Overall, the triad approach with machine learning practices successfully demonstrated quantitative insight into the integrated assessment of natural purification.

RESUMO

The man-made sea dike has disrupted the natural link between riverine and marine ecosystems and caused eutrophication within the aquatic ecosystem. The eutrophic water discharge has also raised concerns. As a representative tidal flat with the longest dike in the world, Saemangeum has experienced the problem of eutrophication. To elucidate the discharge water effects on the benthic food web dynamics, a four-year round sampling was conducted in/outside of the Saemangeum sea dike. Stable isotope analysis was applied to benthos (a total of 54 species) and their potential diets. Water discharge tripled in period II (2021-2022) compared to the period I (2019-2020). However, there were no significant impact changes in food web structure between the two periods due to improved lake water quality in period II. A positive correlation of nutrient concentration between the inner and outer areas of the dike revealed a direct effect of the water discharge on the outer tidal flat. The water discharge altered the spatial environmental conditions and the food web structure of the outer tidal flat. High TN concentrations stimulated the biomass of microphytobenthos (MPB) near the water gates, which in turn increased MPB consumption by benthos, demonstrating the in/direct impacts of water discharge on the food web. Furthermore, filter feeders exhibited a more sensitive response to spatial organic matter distribution compared to deposit feeders in diet utilization. Overall, our novel findings on food web dynamics in a representative tidal flat with artificial structures emphasize the necessity of continuous monitoring to ensure the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

RESUMO

Suaeda glauca, a halophyte in the Amaranthaceae family, exhibits remarkable resilience to high salt and alkali stresses despite the absence of salt glands or vesicles in its leaves. While there is growing pharmacological interest in S. glauca, research on its secondary metabolites remains limited. In this study, chemical constituents of the aerial parts of S. glauca were identified using 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, and its biological activity concerning hair loss was newly reported. Eight compounds, including alkaloids (1~3), flavonoids (4~6), and phenolics (7 and 8), were isolated. The compounds, except the flavonoids, were isolated for the first time from S. glauca. In the HPLC chromatogram, quercetin-3-O-ß-d-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-ß-d-glucoside, and kaempferol were identified as major constituents in the extract of S. glauca. Additionally, the therapeutic potential of the extract of S. glauca and the isolated compounds 1~8 on the expressions of VEGF and IGF-1, as well as the regulation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling, were evaluated in human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Among the eight compounds, compound 4 was the most potent in terms of increasing the expression of VEGF and IGF-1 and the regulation of Wnt/ß-catenin. These findings suggest that S. glauca extract and its compounds are potential new candidates for preventing or treating hair loss.

RESUMO

This study investigated the relationships between phytoplankton assemblages and water contamination by persistent toxic substances (PTSs) and nutrients in an estuary with an artificial dam over one year. The distribution of PTSs, including 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 6 alkylphenols, and 8 metal(loid)s, along with nutrients, exhibited relatively high concentrations with irregular temporal fluctuations in the inner estuary. During winter and spring, phytoplankton communities showed good ecological quality, with an average of 28 species and a density of 1750 cells L-1. In contrast, during summer, there was a significant increase in the density of freshwater species (max 45,000 cells L-1). These assemblages were categorized into three seasonal groups, featuring dominant taxa like blue-green algae and diatoms. Temperature and nutrient levels were the principal factors influencing phytoplankton assemblages, while PTSs had a minor impact. Overall, phytoplankton assemblages displayed strong seasonal variation, mainly influenced by freshwater input and nutrient availability.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to investigate the spatiotemporal variability in subtidal meiofaunal assemblages off the southern coast of Korea at local and regional scales. Abiotic and biotic samples were collected by site (three sites at least 10 km apart) within region (three coastal regions at least 50 km apart) over 7 years (2015-2021). The density and taxon richness of meiofaunal assemblages differed significantly among sites, but not among regions or years. The meiofaunal assemblage composition differed significantly among sites, regions, and years. A distance-based multivariate multiple regression analysis revealed that the mean sediment grain size and total nitrogen, lead, nickel, chromium, and aluminum concentrations were key environmental variables determining the variation of the meiofaunal assemblages. This study can provide basic ecological data for understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of meiofauna assemblages and aid in the development of management strategies to mitigate marine pollution on the southern coast of Korea.

RESUMO

Historical trends of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination were reconstructed from eleven sediment cores located in intertidal zones of the Yellow and Bohai seas for a period encompassing the last 80 years. The analysis encompassed 15 traditional PAHs (t-PAHs), 9 emerging PAHs (e-PAHs), and 30 halogenated PAHs (Hl-PAHs), including 10 chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs) and 20 brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs). Concentrations of target PAHs were highest in industrial and municipal areas situated along the coast of the Bohai Sea, including Huludao, Yingkou, Tianjin, and Dandong, constituting a substantial mass inventory. All target PAHs showed increasing trends since the 1950s, reflecting the development history of South Korea and China. High molecular weight PAHs accumulated in sampling sites more than low molecular weight PAHs. A positive matrix factorization model showed that the PAH sources were coal and gasoline combustion (35%), diesel combustion (33%), and biomass combustion (32%). Over the last 80 years, the contribution of coal and gasoline combustion increased in all regions, while diesel combustion and biomass combustion varied across regions and over time. Toxicity equivalence values were highest for t-PAHs (>99% contribution), followed by Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs, and e-PAHs. Concentrations of t-PAHs in Eastern Asia seas have increased since the 1900s, particularly in intertidal areas compared to subtidal areas. The intertidal zone removed 83% of the total flux of PAHs originating from land and thus appears to serve as a buffer zone against marine pollution. Overall, this study provides novel knowledge on the historical trends and sources of PAHs on a large scale, along with insights for future coastal management.

RESUMO

Global recognition that mangroves support coastal ecosystem services has increased; however, studies on trophic dynamics in mangrove ecosystems remain limited. We seasonally analysed the δ13C and δ15N of 34 consumers and 5 diets to elucidate the food web dynamics in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). Fish had a large niche space during the monsoon summer, reflecting increased trophic roles. In contrast, the small niche space of benthos over seasons reflected consistent trophic positions. Consumers mainly utilized plant-derived organic matters in the dry season and particulate organic matters in the wet season. The present study with literature reviews revealed characteristics of the PRE food web with the depleted δ13C and enriched δ15N, indicating a high contribution of mangrove-derived organic carbon and sewage input, particularly in the wet season. Overall, this study confirmed the seasonal and spatial trophic dynamics in mangrove forests surrounding megacities for future sustainable mangrove ecosystem management.

RESUMO

Humans have been contributing adversely to greenhouse gas emissions by generating a vast amount of CO2, primarily causing climate change. Nature-based climate solutions, consisting of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems, are tremendous potential for sequestering and storing significant amounts of carbon, which can help to slow the progression of climate change. In this study, we use a carbon balance model to simulate the carbon sequestration rate and carbon stored in bare tidal flat (BTF) areas along Korea's west and south coasts from 2018 to 2050. Furthermore, the percentage of potential carbon sources deposited at BTF sites was calculated using a two-terminal mixing model and δ13C data. The carbon deposited on the BTF areas is the result of lateral carbon transport from upslope terrestrial regions as well as marine sources. Based on the δ13C isotope, this study classified potential carbon sources in BTFs sediment into two categories: terrestrial and marine. The results indicate that the proportion of organic carbon contribution from terrestrial sources ranged from 7.63% to 49% in the BTF studied areas. We discuss the validity of projection which was investigated over three years, from 2018 to 2020. A preliminary conclusion is that future carbon storage at BTF sites will increase significantly. Carbon accumulation increases linearly over time in nearly all areas studied, with carbon sequestration rates ranging from 0.053 to 0.623 (MgC ha-1 yr-1). This study found that a significant amount of carbon is sequestered for a long time in the BTF regions based on model simulation results. In addition, it also contributes to projects that seek to promote and conserve these climate benefits by providing estimates of carbon storage in coastal BTFs that can be included in NDCs for the Paris Agreement.

RESUMO

A copepod bioassay with Tigriopus japonicus was applied to evaluate the relative ecotoxicity of sediments in the Yellow and Bohai seas, and contributions of individual PAHs to copepod toxicity were evaluated. Mean toxicity was greatest in the Yellow Sea of China, followed by the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea of Korea. Elevated concentrations of sedimentary PAHs, alkylphenols, and styrene oligomers back-supported the significant toxicities observed in bioassay. Copepod toxicity in relation to PAHs indicated the greatest contribution by indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene. However, lacked contribution by PAHs, viz., 2.4 and 3.0 % for the total immobilization and mortality, respectively, indicated a large proportion of unknown toxicants being widely distributed along the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (YSLME) coastline. Overall, the present study provides useful baseline information for evaluating the potential sedimentary toxicants, with emphasizing further investigation to identify the unknown toxicants at an LME scale, and elsewhere.

RESUMO

Ecotoxicological effects of spilled oils are well documented, but study of recovery of marine benthic communities is limited. Long-term recovery of hard bottom communities during physical and biological remediations after a spill was monitored. A 60-day experiment was conducted using a mesocosm with monitoring of eight endpoints by use of the sediment quality triad (SQT). First, physical treatment of hot water + high pressure flushing maximally removed residual oils (max=93%), showing the greatest recovery among SQT variables (mean=72%). Physical cleanup generally involved adverse effects such as depression of the microphytobenthic community during the initial period. Next, biological treatments, such as fertilizer, emulsifier, enzyme and augmentation of the microbes, all facilitated removal of oil (max=66%) enhancing ecological recovery. Analysis of the microbiome confirmed that oil-degrading bacteria, such as Dietzia sp. and Rosevarius sp. were present. A mixed bioremediation, including fertilizer + multi-enzyme + microbes (FMeM) maximized efficacy of remediation as indicated by SQT parameters (mean=47%). Natural attenuation with "no treatment" showed comparable recovery to other remediations. Considering economic availability, environmental performance, and technical applicability, of currently available techniques, combined treatments of physical removal via hand wiping followed by FMeM could be most effective for recovery of the rocky shore benthic community.

RESUMO

The regulating ecosystem services, such as water purification, that tidal flats provide by nitrogen (N) burial are being increasingly recognized; yet, quantitative estimates remain limited. Here, we first present nationwide evaluation of total N stocks and burial rates in the Korean tidal flats, based on a 3 year long monitoring assessment combined with remote sensing approach. A total of 20 intertidal flats representing 7 provinces of South Korea were extensively surveyed in 2018-20. The sediment textural type (sand, mixed, and mud) classified from remotely sensed imagery was significantly correlated to that identified from field data (p < 0.01), warranting a nationwide estimate of total N stocks. The estimated total N stocks and burial rates in the tidal flats of Korea were 1.5 Tg N and 8,192 Mg N yr-1, respectively. Total N stocks significantly varied by region, province, morphology, salinity, and land use type adjacent to the corresponding tidal flats. In general, the N stocks of tidal flats were influenced by the degree of terrestrial N inputs to the ocean. The N stocks were significantly correlated with several physical parameters, such as precipitation (p < 0.05) and tide (p < 0.01). Among the sediment properties, the mud content was found to be the key factor determining the total N stocks across the 20 intertidal flats (p < 0.01). Finally, by applying the environmental value for N removal (USD km-2 yr-1) to the tidal flat area (km2), the economic value of the total N removal was estimated as ~233 Million USD yr-1 in Korea and ~15 Billion USD yr-1 globally. Overall, the present work confirms the valuable ecosystem service of tidal flat's cost-efficient N removal capacity, highlighting marine ecosystem service.

RESUMO

Long-term trends in the spatial distributions and sources of metal(loid)s in soils adjacent to the west coastal areas of South Korea have been systematically investigated for 10 years (2010-2019). Monitoring in 17 sites clearly showed site- and region-specific distributions, being associated with land use type (significant differences, as road > agriculture > wild) (P < 0.05), rather than temporal variation. The great concentrations of all metal(loid)s were found near Lake Shihwa (LS) and Geum River (GG), near the road, indicating that transportation activity was the main source of metal(loid)s contamination in soil. Especially, Cd (0.5 mg kg-1), Hg (0.04 mg kg-1), Pb (65 mg kg-1), and Zn (184 mg kg-1), related to the transportation activity near the road, showed twice greater than other land use types, on average. The concentration of metal(loid)s in each site and with the same land use type did not greatly vary over the years, with no significant annual difference (P > 0.05). The degree of metal(loid)s contamination compared to the background levels was identified in the order of Pb > Zn > Cr > Cu > As>Cd > Ni > Hg, with the contaminated hotspots mostly in LS or GG. The potential ecological risk was evidenced for Cd and Hg, but such a trend was temporally irregular over the years, indicating site-specificity. The sources of metal(loid)s were carefully determined as natural (20%), fuel combustion & agricultural pollution (43%), and vehicular emissions (37%) using the Positive Matrix Factorization model. The relative contribution of each source to contamination over the last decade was found to be similar, supporting that site-dependent lesser variation in metal(loid)s contamination in the coastal areas of South Korea. Overall, the distribution of metal(loid)s in the soil near the west coastal areas over the last decade largely depended on land use activities, and contamination degree was associated with non-point sources, such as transportation and fuel combustion.

RESUMO

This study investigated the current contamination status and potential sources of traditional and emerging polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (t-PAHs and e-PAHs) in the sediments across a wide area of the Yangtze River, spanning nine cities. Fifty-seven sediment samples were collected in 2019, from which 15 t-PAHs and 11 e-PAHs were analyzed using GC-MSD. In addition, organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in sediments were measured to evaluate associations with PAHs contamination. OC, TN, and their stable isotope ratios showed a wide range of site-specific contents and values, indicating high variation in contamination and sources. Concentrations of t-PAHs and e-PAHs in sediments ranged from 0.6 to 200,000 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) and 1.1 to 20,000 ng g-1 dw, respectively. Hotspot sites located in Nanjing (PuKou), Taizhou (JingJiang), and Suzhou (ZhangJiaGang). PAHs contamination reflected land use type and human activity in the surrounding area. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) modeling showed that, on average (n = 57), vehicle emissions were the most dominant contribution (57%), followed by petroleum (28%) and fossil fuel combustion (15%). Sites with high PAHs contamination in sediments were of severe ecological risk. Contributions to the potential risks of PAHs were most significant in the order of dibenz[a,h]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene. The primary origin of these compounds appeared to be fossil fuel combustion. The results of this study are expected to provide useful baseline data on the current contamination status and potential sources of traditional and emerging pollutants in the sediments of the Yangtze River, China.

RESUMO

Excessive accumulation of soil heavy metals (HMs) result in the deterioration of soil quality and reduction of agricultural productivity and safety. The accumulation status, temporal change, and sources of soil HMs were determined by large-scale field surveys in 2014 and 2019 in rapid urbanization and industrialization area along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China. Eighty-two surface soil samples were collected in 2014 and ninety-five surface soil samples and seven soil profiles (0-100 cm) were collected in 2019. The mean concentrations (in, mg kg-1) of As (10.17), Cd (0.33), Cr (86.38), Cu (38.22), Hg (0.11), Ni (37.67), Pb (43.95), and Zn (113.15) were greater than the corresponding background values. The concentrations of these 8 HMs significantly varied with site-specific distributions depending on nearby landscape patterns with decreasing order: agricultural soil around industrial > agricultural soil > fallow soil. Cd and Hg were found to be priority pollutants due to their greater accumulations in this study area. Combined analyses of principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization model addressed source apportionment of soil HMs. Industrial activities, parent materials, and agricultural and traffic activities were three major sources and their contributions were 35.56%, 35.20%, and 29.23%, respectively. The concentrations of soil As, Cd, Cr and Pb increased with time. This study elucidates how changes in land uses and time affect soil HMs and provides reasonable suggestions for the effective reduction of HM contamination in economically and industrially developed areas of China, and elsewhere.

RESUMO

The physical functions of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), viz., by-product of microphytobenthos (MPB), in tidal flat system are well documented, but some ecological aspects remain unknown. We investigated MPB biomass (Chl-a), EPS, diatom assemblage, and erodibility in two contrasting tidal flat environments (megatidal vs. macrotidal flat) in the Yellow Sea. Thick biofilms were observed when MPB bloomed, with high Chl-a and increased EPS concentrations. Among diatom genera, Navicula was the most dominant taxa found over the year (mean 41%) in both areas. Compared with non-bloom periods, the erodibility decreased by 54-73% as biofilm thickened during the blooms. It was attributed to the elevated abundance of large-sized (>40 µm) Navicula, which was expected to secrete large amounts of EPS. Overall, we successfully demonstrated spatiotemporal differences of sediment stabilization that significantly related to ecological variations of MPB, and identified the key diatom genus as a "sediment stabilizer" in the typical tidal flats of the Yellow Sea.

RESUMO

Blue carbon science requires the estimates of organic carbon stock and sequestration rate; however, holistic data analysis remains limited in South Korea. The present study reports current organic carbon stocks and sequestration rates in the coastal areas of West Sea, South Sea, and East Sea of South Korea, encompassing entire intertidal areas using long-term field survey combined with remote sensing technology. Twenty-one intertidal flats were targeted across seven provinces (Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Gangwon). Out of the evaluated environmental parameters, mud content represented a significant factor controlling sedimentary organic carbon stocks across target areas, and was significantly positively correlated to the total organic carbon (p < 0.05). Organic carbon stocks measured in salt marshes (i.e., upper intertidal zone) reflected the high carbon fixation capacity of halophytes through primary production. Sediment textural type was classified using analysis of remotely sensed imagery, and was closely correlated to field-based classification data (p < 0.05). Using field and remote sensing results, we estimated total organic carbon stocks (13,142,149 Mg C) and sequestration rates (71,383 Mg C yr-1) in the tidal flats of South Korea. This study presents the first report on blue carbon potential in the Korean tidal flats, providing baseline information on the carbon dynamics of intertidal sediments in this region and, potentially, elsewhere.

RESUMO

Microplastics become one of the serious persistent pollutants in terrestrial environments, and thus may represent a threat to the quality of soil and inhabiting organisms. It is imperative to understand occurrence and distribution of microplastics in soils. In this study, a large-scale field survey encompassing 85 locations along the lower reaches of Yangtze River and estuary was performed to investigate the microplastics abundance in agricultural soils. Microplastics were isolated from all the samples and all depths (0-80 cm). The microplastics abundance in soils ranged from 4.94 items/kg to 252.70 items/kg, with an average of 37.32 items/kg. The most common microplastic type detected was Polypropylene (PP) occurring as white fragments with sizes ranging from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. Abiotic parameters such as soil pH and texture were the general factors being associated with microplastic abundance. Meantime, traffic was indicated as one important factor to affect the microplastic abundance. Overall, the road input seems to be the main source of microplastic pollution in agricultural areas along the Yangtze River and estuary. Further studies should elucidate the original of the plastic fragments in order to establish a baseline for regulative initiatives securing environmental protection.

RESUMO

The Yellow and Bohai seas have long been contaminated by persistent toxic substances (PTSs) from numerous (un)known anthropogenic sources. In this study, we used Vibrio fischeri bioassay to evaluate ecotoxicological profiles associated with sedimentary PTSs contamination at a large marine ecosystem (LME) scale. A total of 125 surface sediments collected from the coastal areas of the Yellow and Bohai seas were analyzed both for aqueous and organic extracts. Not surprisingly, the results indicated site-dependent toxicities, but most sites were identified as non-toxic to V. fischeri. For aqueous extracts and organic extracts, 13% and 8% of samples, respectively exhibited marginal toxicity, while 0% and 2% of samples exhibited moderate toxicity. However, it should be noted that organic extracts (mean TU = 56) induced stronger toxicities than aqueous samples (mean TU = 0.4). This result generally back-supported the high toxicity potentials associated with sedimentary sink of organic pollutants. Several PTSs measured in the samples indicated a significant contribution to the observed V. fischeri toxicities. Of note, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; r = 0.28, p < 0.05), styrene oligomers (r = 0.41, p < 0.01), and alkylphenols (r = 0.38, p < 0.05) showed significant associations to the observed bacterial inhibition. Among PAHs, benzo[a]anthracene and phenanthrene exhibited a significant contribution to the observed V. fischeri toxicities. Meantime, salinity which reflects the distance from the point sources of land-driven pollutants along the rivers and estuaries in the Yellow and Bohai seas was a key environmental variable representing the sample toxicities. Overall, the present study provides baseline information for evaluating the potential sediment toxicity to implement responsible coastal management at an LME scale, and elsewhere.

RESUMO

Intertidal flats, as transition zones where terrestrial and marine ecosystems meet, provide unique environments and play an important role in marine ecosystems. In particular, the environmental characteristics of tidal marshes show are different than those of bare flats, especially in the rhizosphere. However, unlike the rhizosphere in terrestrial ecosystems, the rhizosphere of plants in tidal marsh areas and the associated microbial community have been the focus of very little research. Thus, this study investigated the diversity and variation in bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of a Phragmites australis and Suaeda japonica and along the sediment depths. High-throughput sequencing was performed by amplifying the 16S rRNA gene of environmental DNA extracted from sediment cores, and indicator species were identified with respect to the vegetation type and sediment depth. The most abundant phylum was Proteobacteria, followed by Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, and Firmicutes. In general, the results indicated that not only vegetation type and sediment depth themselves but also their interaction resulted in significant differences among the bacterial communities. The envfit results revealed that the environmental variables of sediment, such as mud content, organic matter, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen, had significant effects on the bacterial community structure. The indicator species varied depending on the vegetation type and sediment depth, showing significant correlations with certain selected environmental variables, but were fundamentally related to the rhizosphere. Overall, this study revealed the key factors that determine the bacterial community structure in tidal marshes and the indicator species according to vegetation type in the little studied rhizosphere of the intertidal ecosystem.
